Katherine considers herself an expert horseman who has owned, ridden, showed and trained horses in various capacities for over forty years. She was an art teacher in the public schools for many years before she began two successful businesses of her own, one being a riding instructor. She truly enjoys teaching methods of horse riding and full horse care to beginners and improving the intermediate and advanced riders style and technique in western riding. Katherine has served as a coach for an equestrian competition team for four years. Her program focuses on being a confident, well rounded horse rider and horse owner. Building farm community and camaraderie is very important to her as she teaches and spends time at the farm. She believes that we all learn from one another and loves for people to feel included as part of the Miller Hollow Farm family. She boards three of her own horses at Miller Hollow and rides often with her young daughter. If she were to choose a favorite riding discipline it would be gaited riding.

I used to be the kid who loved horses but didn’t have access to them. When I was 13 I was given riding lessons for my birthday and I haven’t looked back! Being around horses has completely changed my life and I want others to be able to experience them and that is why I love giving lessons. I started out riding English and did some jumping and dressage until college where I was on the equestrian team and began to learn Western. When I realized that the equestrian team took time away from riding my horse I decided to work for an Arabian horse trainer instead. There I learned several different disciplines as well as how to work with horses and people in all stages of training. Early on in my riding career I realized my love of showing and I have had the opportunity to show in English, Western, Dressage and Saddleseat. I have also had the opportunity to show multiple breeds of horses, such as Arabians, Saddlebreds, Friesians, Andalusians, Lusitanos and Quarter Horses. I discovered my love of giving riding lessons after I volunteered at a therapeutic riding program and I saw the incredible benefit that horses offered as well as the joy it brought the riders. I have given lessons on and off for the last 15 years. My goal as an instructor is to teach horse care from the very basics of horse safety and grooming up to reaching riding goals. I would like everyone who has lessons to end up with the knowledge to confidently own their own horse. My background and riding experience has taught me the importance of the connection between horse and rider at all levels, so another goal of mine as an instructor is to teach that basic connection and build on it so that the rider can apply that to any horse they ride. I also enjoy sharing my love of horses with my two young daughters.
